Cover Letter Tips
The cover letter is an important part of your job application, but can harm your chances of attaining a job if done incorrectly. This is your first impression, so it is imperative that you make a positive one. Here are some tips to improve your cover letter.
Rule #1: Keep it short and sweet!
A few lines is all that is necessary. No one wants to read a novel about your life, or a synopsis of your resume. If you want to point out some qualifications you possess then use bullet points.
Rule #2: If sending by email, put your cover letter in the body of the email Do not send a blank email with attachments when applying for a job. Put your cover letter into the body of the email and you can say "If you would like this as a PDF I have also attached it to this email."
Rule #3: Customize If you have contact information for the person or company you are sending this to include it in the cover letter. Always address where you saw the advertisement and customize your cover letter to the particular position you are applying for. Do not stress if you do not have the hiring managers name or company name, but do not describe in your cover letter how much you want to work for their organization, when you don't know who they are. This comes off as too desperate.
Rule #4: Do not copy your resume
No one wants to read a synopsis of your resume. Do a few short lines about how you are qualified for this particular position by citing their requirements and how you match up. Express things about yourself that they would not learn by reading your resume. This will help you to stand out in the crowd of other applicants.
Rule #5: Brag!
This is your opportunity to say why you are the perfect candidate for this position. If you don't prop yourself up, no one else will.
Rule #6: Proofread!
This is the most important aspect of any cover letter. A cover letter is your first impression. If you make mistakes here they will harm your chances of being considered for the position.
Rule #7: ASK!
Ask for the job. Conclude the cover letter by expressing that you believe you are the person for the job and express that you hope they find your resume appealing and you look forward to speaking/meeting with them in the near future.
